I don't like the idea of leashes at all. I know plenty of people who grew up just fine without a leash- and I can tell you right now that at least 80% of these fine ladies and gentlemen are not dogs.

You have to teach your child that it's not appropriate to run too far away from you, not to knock things over/break things, and teach them how to act in public appropriately without yanking them back via harness every time you don't like something they do. Might as well go get some biscuits and a water squirter, too, huh?

What about child predators? Regardless of one's parenting, a child can be kidnapped in a heartbeat.

Personally, I think that leashes for children under the age of 12 should be required by law.

<a href="#comment-12" rel="nofollow">@Tertial </a>
Uhh, I find your comment quite offensive. ALL children have been known to take off running for no reason. Not just autistics.

Why do I say this? I am autistic. I did run and play like other children. But guess what else? My brother is normal. He was way worse! He ran on all fours at the store! He actually caused many more problems than I ever did.

So don't go judging Autistics when Normal children do the same things or worse.

I was actually just searching on the Internet for children's harnesses and came across this website by accident, but after reading some of these posts, I had to comment. I have 3 children, ages 2, 3, and 4, and my 3 year old son is autistic (he is the one I was searching for a harness for). My 4 year old is very well behaved, and we have never had any problems with him taking off in a crowd or anything, but it's a completely different story with my 3 year old. He is very tall and muscular for his age, weighing in at almost 43 lbs and can run faster than my 4 year old. If something catches his eye (and it could be the strangest thing that you would never think of), he will take off for it in a heartbeat. Now, if I am with my husband, one of us will stay with the other 2 boys and the other will go off to chase him. If I am by myself, I have to grab my 2 and 4 year olds and run to catch him by myself (and yes, this has happened before, not pleasant). If he were ever to get lost, I don't know what I would do. I actually have nightmares about this, that he cannot talk to tell anyone who he is. Think of all the horrible people out there who would just die to get their hands on a little boy who would never be able to talk back or tell anyone who he is. This is why I am considering a harness for him. He is just getting too big and heavy for me to physically restrain him when he wants to take off AND I have 2 other little boys to worry about at the same time. I don't think these people are bad parents; I think they are being vigilant about keeping their children close, while at the same time allowing them some freedom to explore and get their exercise. Taking care of children is NOT the "most easiest thing a person can do" and add to that the challenges of taking care of an autistic child, and I say, if you have to have them on a harness for their safety and comfort (my son hates being confined to a stroller), who cares? It says more about the people who judge others by outward appearances, than it does about the people using these devices.

<strong><a href="#comment-81" rel="nofollow">Lis</a> :</strong>
How about keep your kids in a stroller or teach your kids some obedience? How about a muzzle for kids who talk to much?
Its funny yet sad to see.
</blockquote>

Stroller: lets them get fat / no exercise
Teach obedience: not sure every child is as up for learning this skill as every parent would wish for
Muzzle: think they're designed for biting, and would probably be entirely appropriate if a child went round biting people.

Given the wide polarity of people's views, from I'm sure both sensible and non-sensible people, I think its reasonable to say that it can only be a personal decision for the parents and the situation involved. No rules can be applied to all cases. I think real parenting problems run a lot deeper than this one.

Just wondering if the people who are against this actually have children. This is not mean. People letting their kids run around like maniac to be kidnapped or run over is mean. It has nothing to do with bad parenting or making your children behave. Toddlers want a certain amount of freedom. This makes it possible to give them that without putting them in harms way. It's not to be used everywhere, but places like the zoo when your child wants to get down and look at things and there is no way you can hold their hand all day. It's unfair to ask a child to be in a stroller all day. And there is no way this is going to mess up a child for life. I take it from your language you will manage to do that without a leash.
